A New Tower of Babel

Technology has made it possible (and is continuing to do so) to make our world into one global community and in effect making the world, one big marketplace where products, services, even ideas are freely sold and bought. Communication is, for all intents and purposes, instantaneous: crossing borders and boundaries with the speed of light. The vastest ocean, the highest mountains and even the broadest deserts have been overcome by the advances in telecommunications. We have the capacity to access news in Washington D.C. as much as Reykjavik, Iceland. There is no more isolation and the words of John Donne: “no man is an island” now finds literal meaning. The internet gives equal access to everyone an immense amount of information and the ability to connect with practically the whole world.

We have in a sense conquered the world with our capacity to bring ideas to its farthest corners. It is after all ideas that produce products and services, ideas that bring innovation and change. Ideas will continue to define our world and influence the coming generations seeking their identities. But we are here now, being defined according to a malevolent conspiracy that would make us forget our true identities and forgo of our destinies in exchange for the trappings of this world. This is the conspiracy that started ages ago, initiated by pride that divided heaven. Now we have a cabal of men drunk with their successes, guided by this evil force who seeks not only to control us but to have our very souls. The war rages but do we see.

The world has changed so rapidly in the last fifty years and even more radically in the last twenty. Technology has made this so especially with man’s ability to communicate with each other. It is this ability to communicate and exchange information that has allowed man to build a new Tower of Babel, fostering an arrogance that knows no God but himself. Indeed this is man’s folly.

I fear as man continues to succeed in innovating and improving technology, his hubris will continue. He will be in effect a self reliant creature, confident in his talents and abilities, creating a world according to his will. But we will find out soon enough that we live only by God’s grace and mercy. If there is pride, there will be a fall but for now man believes he is supreme.
